Xu Ying, born in Shanghai, lives and works in Switzerland.
Her practice centers on the resonance between body and consciousness, exploring the subtle relationships among personal experience, cultural memory, and the passage of time. Painting remains the foundation of her work—a way of perceiving, reflecting, and tracing emotion through form. Through depictions of the human body, she examines how social and cultural imprints are inscribed upon the flesh, shaping both identity and perception.
Now living in Switzerland, Xu carries within her the experiences and sensibilities formed during her life in China. This dual awareness allows her to observe and understand the world from shifting perspectives, infusing her practice with both distance and intimacy. Her works move between vulnerability and strength, conformity and self-definition—becoming visual meditations on belonging and transformation.
In recent years, she has extended her practice to textiles, found fabrics, and modest everyday materials. She approaches Mending as a Manner—not merely as an act of repair, but as a way of thinking, of attending to the quiet dialogue between time, memory, and existence. In this ongoing project, sewing becomes a contemplative philosophy: a non-violent gesture of care, reflection, and renewal.
Through this restrained yet sensuous language, Xu Ying reveals that truth does not arise from perfection, but from the slow and tender process of mending—an intimate cultivation of being.
